More than 500 entries at Elham show! Gardeners, photographers, bakers, flower arrangers, young artists, all rose to the challenge to enter the Elham Gardening Society’s 135th Summer Show at Elham Village Hall on Saturday 27 July. This summer’s inclement weather did not seem to have affected the splendid displays of flowers and vegetables on what turned out to be a beautiful afternoon.

Phillip Oostenbrink, Walmer Castle Head Gardener, and his Kitchen gardener Lisa, awarded the Harrowing Bowl for the most pleasing garden to Maggie Newington, and the Harrowing Cup for the best home garden and allotment to Pam and John Tebbs.

David Kincaid earned six trophies for amazing displays of sweet peas and vegetables; a further three were bagged by Maggie Newington for her stunning Floral Art displays while her From my Own Garden arrangement won her the Best Exhibit in the show. The arrangements won high praise from the Floral Art judge who said she had never seen such high-quality displays in a local show.

The Domestic section tables were laden with more than 70 mouthwatering cakes, bakes, jams, chutneys and liqueurs (more than the Kent Show!). The star baker in the gentlemen only class was John Baker. His six shortbread fingers won him the Rupert Trophy for the fourth consecutive year.

The children at Elham Primary School produced more than 100 drawings and paintings celebrating the Paris Olympics 2024. Overall winner of the Anna Clayton Trophy was Albert from Reception class.

The show highlight is always the hotly-contested Potato in a Bucket competition, eagerly watched this year by visitors enjoying a glass of Pimm’s in the warm sunshine. It was a good day for Jenny Gasson who regained her title with a weight of 7lb 1oz.

Gerry Newman’s photograph of an individual flower won him the W.I. Cup, and was just one superb photograph among many entries.

Gardening Society Chairman, Doug Martin, said: “Our main judge, Janine Doulton, said that the show was the best she had seen this year. It was a great success, helped by good weather, with plentiful entries of excellent quality including the children’s Olympics artwork. Credit for all this goes to Pam Flight, our hard-working show secretary.”
